Temporary Work Visas

If you would like to visit Australia for a holiday and be able to work during your stay, you can apply for a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) or a Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462). If you held a Student visa (subclass 500) and completed your course of study in Australia in the last 6 months, you can apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to be able to stay and work in Australia temporarily. 

Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417)

  • Be outside Australia

  • Be aged 18 to 30 years (or up to 35 years if you hold a passport from Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy or the UK)

  • Hold a passport from an eligible country

  • Not be accompanied by dependent children or other family members (each family member over 18 years has to apply for their own Working Holiday visa)​

Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462)

  • Be outside Australia

  • Be aged 18 to 30 years 

  • Hold a passport from an eligible country

  • If you hold a valid passport issued by China, India or Vietnam, you must participate in a visa pre-application process and be randomly selected to apply for a first Work and Holiday visa

  • Not be accompanied by dependent children or other family members (each family member over 18 years has to apply for their own Working Holiday visa)

  • Meet education requirement

  • Meet certain standard of English language proficiency

Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485)

  • Be in Australia

  • Be aged under 35 years (or under 50 in certain circumstances)

  • Have held a Student visa (subclass 500) in the last 6 months and must have completed your course within 6 months of applying

  • ​Meet study requirement

  • Meet certain standard of English language proficiency

  • Have an occupation on the relevant Skilled Occupations List and have a skills assessment for that occupation (if applying under Post-Vocational Stream)

If you are a skilled worker and have an employer-sponsor, consider one of the Sponsored Work visas.

​

If you are a skilled worker but do not have an employer-sponsor, consider one of the Skilled visas.
